This is a story I wrote for the Games News Service (GNS) at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. I was a flash quote reporter for the badminton, and received the rare chance to write an article, which was usually my supervisor’s job.

GOLD COAST – Seventh-seed Kieran MERRILEES (SCO) was knocked out of the men’s singles event by unseeded world No.227 LOH Kean Yew (SGP) at the Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre on Wednesday 11 April.

The 20-year-old LOH came back from a four-point deficit in the third game to win 21-12, 18-21, 21-18.

In the team event earlier this week, LOH had served notice of his potential by having four match points against England No.1 Rajiv OUSEPH and more than holding his own against world No.2 Srikanth KIDAMBI (IND), although both matches ended in defeat for the Singaporean.

LOH is one win away from a potential meeting with two-time Commonwealth Games men’s singles champion LEE Chong Wei of Malaysia in the quarterfinals.

LEE’s compatriot and fellow medal hopeful Soniia CHEAH also cruised to an easy win over Rachael DARRAGH(NIR) to book her spot in the round of 16.

The Indian fans in attendance had plenty to cheer, with the fancied quartet of KIDAMBI, Venkata PUSARLAH. S. PRANNOY and Saina NEHWAL all comfortable winners.
